At Transcona Roofing, employees feel they’re valued
When Corina Ngan Tian began as a service coordinator at Transcona Roofing Ltd. in 2022, she quickly saw the opportunity for improvements in customer service. That soon propelled her into the service manager position. She had the expertise to take the company to the next level.
“I saw the department was in need of processes and procedures to improve efficiencies and customer service,” says Ngan Tian. “I also recognized the potential for the department and the team members who worked in it.”
Transcona Roofing, headquartered in Winnipeg, offers its services throughout Manitoba and into northwestern Ontario. It is a full-service roofing and waterproofing contractor for the installation, repair and maintenance of roofs on industrial, commercial and institutional buildings.
As service manager, “I oversee the operations of the service department, coordinating the needs of the customers and the field and office staff while meeting the needs of the business,” Ngan Tian says. “This encompasses customer and staff relations, administration, business development, sales, inventory and other needs.”
President Rich Marchetti says a key principle of the company culture is that taking care of employees means they in turn will take care of customers.
“We believe in continuous improvement and empowered our employees to make improvements in how we operate to reduce inefficiencies and create job satisfaction,” says Marchetti.
“In our 2024 employee engagement survey, 99 per cent of employees felt they had the tools and resources to be successful at work, 100 per cent would recommend our firm as an excellent place to work and 100 per cent felt the company values aligned with personal values.”
Ngan Tian says the company supports her family’s needs. With three young children, she has the flexibility to adjust her schedule or work from home.
“The company invests in leadership development of its team through learning opportunities such as courses, mentorship, attending industry trade shows, industry peer groups and continuous improvement training,” Ngan Tian says. “Transcona Roofing allows a space for development and advancement for those who put in the work.”
Marchetti started with Transcona Roofing more than a decade ago and has invested a lot into developing the culture of the company.
“I started as the corporate controller. I have a passion for cost accounting and customer service which got me more involved in the operations of the business. In 2016, I purchased the business and spent the last eight years building the team and the culture that aligns with my values of working hard, being humble, continuously improving and always doing what we say,” says Marchetti.
“The construction industry, in general, struggles with creating a positive work environment and offering their customers a positive experience. I saw an opportunity to do things differently and it has paid off.”
Transcona Roofing was recognized by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Manitoba in 2022 with the Pinnacle Award for customer service and again in 2024 with the Pinnacle Award for going above and beyond for the firm’s customers. In 2024, the company also won the BOMA Canada award for customer service.
Transcona Roofing does not have any formalized working groups but it has a social committee that focuses on fostering inclusion while celebrating everyone’s differences and uniqueness.
“As a strengths-based organization, we help each person thrive and perform at their best,” Ngan Tian says. “Our positive and empowering culture motivates our crews, inspiring them to go above and beyond for our customers.”
Marchetti says the firm centres on creating a positive culture with a focus on safety and quality on all job sites.
“I am proud of the team we have built,” he says.
