Recognized as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2024):

Here are some of the reasons why Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2024):

  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences' campus building footprint includes an architecturally integrated solar photovoltaic array on an existing parking structure, a cogeneration facility (unique facility simultaneously produces electricity and useful heat, generating most of the hospital's power), and LED exterior lighting retrofits to help save energy
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences has a well-developed environmental sustainability policy that aims to continually improve environmental performance and quality of patient care by optimizing energy and water use, reducing waste, preventing pollution and promoting the health of the environment -- the policy is supported by a number of unique outreach initiatives to encourage employee involvement, including the annual Earth Matters Showcase to teach employees about behaviours they can adopt at work and at home
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences recently created an internal Green Task Force focused on guiding and supporting initiatives that will improve 'greening' and environmental stewardship across the organization -- in its first year, the Green Task Force established the 'GROW' Framework to focus its efforts on the following categories: green buildings and grounds, research, education and culture, clinical operations, and waste and procurement
