Recognized as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2025):
By Richard Yerema and Chantel Watkins, and Sonja Verpoort, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors (Apr 21, 2025)
Here are some of the reasons why FortisAlberta Inc. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2025):
- FortisAlberta and its employees have implemented formal initiatives to reduce operational impacts on local wildlife, including a Woodland Caribou protection program (promotes grazing vegetation in power line corridors) and the construction of nesting platforms for ferruginous hawks, ospreys and owls
- FortisAlberta has introduced several green building features across its locations, including solar power installations at four sites and a 99,000-litre rainwater collection system for irrigation at its operations building in Airdrie, Alberta -- the organization also opened its first net-zero building in Coaldale, Alberta, designed to meet the Canadian Green Building Council's Zero Carbon Building Standard (using only renewable energy for heating and cooling)
- Each year, FortisAlberta awards environmental grants to support new or expanded green initiatives in local communities and schools -- past projects have included community naturalization efforts, such as reintroducing native trees and shrubs in urban and peri-urban areas, along with tree planting, outdoor classrooms, and the construction of gardens and greenhouses
