Recognized as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2025):
By Richard Yerema and Chantel Watkins, and Sonja Verpoort, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors (Apr 21, 2025)
Here are some of the reasons why Surrey, City of was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2025):
- City of Surrey encourages employees to choose sustainable transportation options by offering transit subsidies, preferred parking for carpoolers, a partnership with the Modo car-sharing service, and participation in an annual Commuter Challenge and Bike to Work Week
- City of Surrey operates a unique organic biofuel processing facility that converts collected organics into renewable natural gas, which powers its growing fleet of natural gas-powered garbage trucks -- the city is also advancing its Electric Vehicle Strategy, with plans to transition to a 100 per cent zero-emission fleet and ensure accessible charging infrastructure
- City of Surrey has committed to net-zero emissions through its formal "Pathway to 2050" strategy, which focuses on phasing out fossil fuel use by replacing outdated equipment, upgrading civic facilities, and transitioning from gas boilers to electric heat pumps at pools, arenas, community centres, fire halls, libraries and administrative buildings
